Elation is a cloud-based clinical platform for independent primary care practices. We want doctors spending their time on patients, not paperwork.

We're hiring full-stack engineers for our billing team.

Billing is a challenging domain. We receive data from insurers and partners who each follow the standards a little differently, but we need to make billing simple for our customers regardless of their payer arrangements and chase down every dollar we can for them across denials. We're using LLMs to take over a lot of work people currently do by hand. You'll design, build, and run these systems yourself.

If that sounds interesting, apply even if you don't check every box below.

What the work looks like

Building systems that balance financial transactions between insurance, patients, and the practice. We’re building complex solutions that maximize reimbursement for practices and get them paid more while removing complexity for them.

Working with inconsistent data from outside partners and handling the edge cases well

Shipping AI features that real users depend on, and figuring out how to tell when they're wrong

Improving a mature codebase while customers are using it every day

Owning your work in production and working with Support when something breaks

Collaborating with product and design to identify improvements and make them rapidly

Your first 60 days

Ship something to production

Scope and build a new feature with Product and Design

Learn our stack and enough of the billing domain to be functional

Join code reviews and production support

Engage with customers and learn from their feedback

6–12 months in

You own big features; collaborating with design and product stakeholders all the way through deployment, monitoring, and collecting insights on adoption

You help set technical direction for your team on problems that you own

Support teams, product owners, and sales representatives know you as someone who gets production issues resolved quickly and can speak to the solutions natively

Who we're looking for

You like owning a problem from start to finish. You think about how things will fail before they ship. You can identify when a problem needs a proper fix versus when a simple bandaid will do. You don't need to know healthcare billing already, but you're happy to learn it and to ask the experts a lot of questions. You can explain technical trade-offs to non-engineers. And you already use AI tools in your own work.

How we work

Each team has several engineers, an engineering manager, a product manager, and a designer. Engineers make the technical calls and work with Product on scope and priorities.

Requirements

Essential

5+ years of professional software development (8+ for Staff, including technical leadership)

Production experience building and running backend services and APIs

Comfortable working across the stack and in more than one language

Experience with alerting/observability/instrumentation for real production solutions

Clear communicator with technical and non-technical people

Interest in building with LLMs

Nice to have

Experience building production features with LLMs or machine learning

A data-driven mentality

Python and/or PHP, and MySQL

TypeScript and React

Payments, financial, or ledger systems

Event-driven or distributed systems on AWS

Observability and DevOps

US healthcare, especially medical billing or claims

Everyone Is Welcome

We're committed to building a diverse and inclusive engineering team. Please don't see everything in this post as a 'must have' — if you're excited about this role but don't check every box, we still want to hear from you.

We especially encourage applications from women, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, neurodivergent people, parents, carers and people from lower socio-economic backgrounds. If you have any requirements or accommodations that would help you interview or work comfortably, please let us know.

Our engineering team is fully remote and brings diverse backgrounds and experiences. This role is open to candidates in the US, Canada, and New Zealand.

Salary: $170,000 - $200,000k/yr USD OR $185,000 - $215,000k/yr CAD

Elation welcomes individuals from all backgrounds and walks of life.
