Deep technical ownership, one step below Principal — and still writing code. PrismHR is the HR, payroll, and benefits platform used by employer-services organizations across the United States, backed by Vensure Employer Solutions. Payroll software has a property most software does not: there is no acceptable margin of error, and every defect has someone's name attached to it. That is what makes deep technical work here substantive rather than routine. As an Associate Principal Engineer you own the design and technical direction of significant parts of the platform, and you remain hands-on. This is a senior individual contributor track, not a management step — you will be making architectural decisions, building the difficult parts yourself, and staying accountable for how they behave in production. You will own subsystems end to end: design, implementation, test strategy, and production behaviour. You will take on the problems that have defeated other people — the ones where the symptom is nowhere near the cause and the data is complicated. You will set engineering standards across your area, lead code reviews at a level that raises the whole team, and mentor senior and mid-level engineers, which at this level is part of the job rather than an extra. You will partner with architecture and product management on direction before decisions are locked, and you will have real influence over the modernization work happening between our mature payroll core and the modern stack — which is where the most interesting engineering problems on this platform live: genuine constraints, complex data, and migrations that have to happen without a single missed pay run. The progression from here is Principal Engineer and Architect. This role is deliberately the rung where you prove you can hold technical direction through credibility rather than title. You will need: Roughly 8–12 years of hands-on software engineering, with recent time at senior or staff scope where other engineers depended on what you owned Deep expertise on one of our platforms: JavaScript and TypeScript with Node.js, Express, and Angular; or .NET with C#, ASP.NET Core, and Web API Real experience designing REST APIs or microservices rather than only consuming them Strong SQL and data modeling ability Testing discipline across unit, integration, and functional levels Demonstrated ownership of a subsystem or service in production, including the consequences of your own design decisions Code review leadership and mentoring of senior and mid-level engineers Ability to debug across tiers under pressure and reason from symptom to root cause Nice to have: legacy modernization experience · Docker and containerized development · AWS or Azure · CI/CD ownership · observability and production diagnosis depth · AI-assisted development practice · payroll, benefits, or HCM domain knowledge. What this role is not: a management position, and not an architecture role that hands specifications to other people. If you want either of those, this will frustrate you. If you want technical depth with real authority and no direct reports, it fits. The schedule: 1:00 PM – 10:00 PM IST, Monday to Friday. Not a night shift — your final hours overlap the start of the US East Coast working day, which is when technical direction gets discussed with architecture and product leadership. Your mornings are your own. Competitive compensation aligned to the level, health coverage, conference and learning support, and a defined path to Principal Engineer and Architect.
